Writing about design has influenced me hugely and has given me a taste for beautiful things! Once you see the passion and expertise that goes into hand-block wallpaper or lost wax casting, you appreciate the price tag. I made some key purchases including two Soane hand and bamboo wall lights and a brass hand door handle at the beginning of my house renovation when the coffers were full, knowing that further down the line – and a diminishing bank account – my confidence would waver. I am so glad I made the commitment to buy, these are just investments, they make the house special to me.
I commissioned a portrait of my lurcher, Prince George (he shares a birthday with the junior Royal) from Daisy Carpenter. It’s in the style of Lucien Freud, in pencil, and she has absolutely captured his facial expression and regal repose. He can be a stubborn, stroppy old bastard but I love him dearly and he has been my friend through thick and thin.

Craft is my favourite aspect of design. Craft takes skill and manual dexterity, and is part of our history. I love hearing the stories of how an object comes to life and understanding why a particular craft resonates with the maker. It’s important to champion craft so that ancient techniques such as glass blowing, brass casting and weaving are preserved for the future. As the world becomes more screen-focused and digital, a hobby where your mind has to focus and you use your hands can be incredibly calming and uplifting.
I would love to commission a bespoke Scrabble table with magnetic pieces so they don’t get lost.
Favourite restaurant was always The Caprice and I hear it is back soon as The Arlington – same venue, different name – with the wonderful Jesus in charge and fish cakes on the menu (fingers crossed).
Borgo Santo Pietro, Italy, is a restorative sanctuary for modern souls.
An hour from Florence, I spent a few days last summer at this idyllic spot in the hills, originally a healing stopover for medieval pilgrims, it was acquired by Danes Claus and Jeanette Thottrup in 2001 and now along with a beautifully renovated manor house the estate comprises a 300-acre organic farm, cookery school (overseen by a fabulous 80-year old nonna), vineyard, two restaurants, manicured gardens and 22 suites. I loved the unwavering dedication to sustainability and organic living along with a large dollop of luxury and fine living. A perfect place to detox from computers and phones and bask in nature – ideally in a warm flower-filled bath.
